Radio Channel Celebrates Milestone
(NASHVILLE, TN — JULY 14, 2016) Rural Radio Channel 147 on SiriusXM is excited to have reached its three-year anniversary as a 24/7, year-round channel devoted to providing a wide variety of programming for and about rural American life, the western lifestyle, and agribusiness interests. Over the past year, Rural Radio continues to give listeners all over America an unprecedented connection to the rural community with daily market updates, industry recaps, agriculture and rural news, rural lifestyle programming, and LIVE and delayed western sports events.
Celebration coverage will include live reports from the Rural Radio studios on “Market Day Report” and “Commodity Wrap” with anchor Marlin Bohling, as well as other programming honoring the milestone including “Ag PhD,” “Western Sports Round-Up,” and “Western Sports Weekly.” Additional news packages will be produced and aired on the “Rural Evening News.”
“Rural Radio was launched for the same reasons that we launched RFD-TV. We recognized there was a void in America for programming focused on agriculture, equine, and traditional family entertainment. We successfully filled that void in TV, so radio was not a big leap,” said Patrick Gottsch, founder of RFD-TV and Rural Radio. “At the time there was no other channel like Rural Radio Channel 147 on the SiriusXM lineup of 200+ channels. It’s difficult to stay in the house all day and watch TV. Rural Radio provided an opportunity for people to stay with RFD-TV throughout the day. It was also an opportunity to expand our programming. We expanded “Ag PhD” into an hour format where farmers and ranchers could call in with questions. Creating a daily show like “Western Sports Round-Up” and broadcasting the live rodeo programs on the weekends … we couldn’t do these things on TV, but we could do them on radio. It has worked out well. I’m extremely pleased with the progress we’ve made over the past three years, to have grown, and to have a channel devoted to rural America. And at the same time, SiriusXM has grown. We’re glad to be a part of that. They’re extremely thankful for our programming and we’re extremely pleased with them. We’ve just signed a new contract. We’re really looking forward to the next three years with SiriusXM.”
Rural Radio was launched on July 15, 2013 to give SiriusXM listeners all over America an unprecedented connection to the rural community. SiriusXM’s coast-to-coast coverage allows Rural Radio the ability to reach listeners nationwide who can tune in anywhere at any time – in a tractor cab, on the combine, or city commuter traffic – and get the latest news on the go. The original kick-off celebration was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2013 and featured an all-day celebration at the finish line with food, music, and a classic tractor exhibition. In addition, the Rural Radio team set a Guinness World Record for the largest parade of pickups. The event was sanctioned and qualified against strict requirements specified by the Guinness World Records rules and featured a grand total of 386 pickup trucks from 31 different states circling the track.
“We’ve done a lot of things and been a lot of places with Rural Radio. When you launch something like that and make it grow, you have an opportunity to reach more people,” said long-time rodeo pro and host of “Western Sports Round-Up,” Steve Kenyon. “Rural Radio has created a unique opportunity both through our programming and live rodeo broadcasts to reach an audience that’s always wanted more coverage of Western sports. We are helping to create a new avenue for those events to get coverage and for the fans of those events to be able to see and hear their favorite events like never before.”
