Flint Rasmussen is Joined IN-STUDIO by Country Group, Exile

  • September 30, 2016
  • by RURAL RADIO 147 on SiriusXM
  • · Uncategorized

From left to right: Rural Radio producer Shenan Solo, Exile group members Marlon Hargis, JP Pennington, Steve Goetzman, Les Taylor, Sonny LeMaire.

PBR entertainer Flint Rasmussen continues his tradition of bringing music to his radio show “Outside the Barrel.”  He is joined in-studio TODAY by country/pop band, Exile!  The group came together in 1963 and, since then, has produced hits that topped both the pop and country charts.  Some of their No. 1 singles include “I Don’t Want to Be a Memory” and “Give Me One More Chance.”

The group talks about their decision to re-vamp their sound and shift from pop music to a more country-style genre in the early 1980’s.  Their country tunes became wildly popular overseas and much to their surprise, upon arrival in Johannesburg, South Africa, Exile was greeted by several thousand animated fans. “We were huge stars and didn’t even know it,” says band member Sonny LeMaire.

Sonny and JP pride themselves on writing their own music for the group, and have both been recognized as Songwriter of the Year by BMI.  50 years have passed, and five of the original band members continue to record music and perform on tour today.

Listen to the full interview on “Outside the Barrel” with Flint Rasmussen on RURAL RADIO Channel 147 on SiriusXM Today(12/21) at 5 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET.

Catch Up with Highway 101 Singer, Paulette Carlson

  • September 26, 2016
  • by RURAL RADIO 147 on SiriusXM
  • · Channel 147 · Interview · Music & Entertainment · People · Programming · Schedule · Shows · SiriusXM

Last week on “Outside the Barrel,” host Flint Rasmussen had the wonderful opportunity to hang out and chat with Highway 101 lead singer, Paulette Carlson.  Throughout their career, Highway 101 recorded four No. 1 singles, 10 Top Ten Hits, and was nominated for two Grammy awards for “Best Country Album” and “Best Country Single”.

Ever since she was a little girl, Paulette knew she would grow up to marry a cowboy and become a singer/songwriter.  She grew up in Minnesota but decided that if she really wanted to make it big, she’d have to commit herself and move to Nashville.

After having great success in the music industry, Paulette took some time off from her music career to be a mother and wife but tells Flint she never stopped loving music.  “This is who I am, in my world, I am a singer/songwriter”.

The family has been living in Montana, but Paulette recently returned to Nashville where she has acquired a manager and a PR firm and plans to begin touring again.  On her first concert back, Paulette said it was like she never missed a beat – she just loved performing for people, no matter where or when.

Outside the Barrel with Flint Rasmussen airs on Fridays at 5pm ET and Sundays at 1pm ET on Sirius XM Radio Channel 147.

Rural Roots Lead to Jericho Woods

  • August 15, 2016
  • by RURAL RADIO 147 on SiriusXM
  • · Free Listening Period · Uncategorized

11118369_GThe road of life is seldom a straight one.  Just ask Jericho Woods lead singer Josh Mitcham.  The Kentucky native worked as an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor before committing to music full-time earlier this year.

The band, which includes Mitcham’s cousin, Paul Priest, his high school bandmate, Dustin Spencer and friends Stan Nickell and Jory Hutchens, released their debut album, Same Ol’ Dirt in spring of 2015. The album represents more than a lifelong dream.

“’Same Ol’ Dirt’ has a couple meanings,” explains Mitcham. “One is that most of the guys in the band came from the same place, the same geographical area… the same dirt! The other meaning is from the title song that eludes to not being able to reap a different result from the same ol’ dirt, relationship-wise.”

Mitcham and the band get their inspiration from many different influences, including classic country and bluegrass.

“We listen to everything in the van,” Mitcham explains. “But yes, we listen to a lot of traditional music: lots of bluegrass, Dwight Yoakam, Keith Whitely. We also listen to a lot of The Allman Brothers, Little Feet, and my favorite…The Foo Fighters!”

“We have always characterized our music as rural — rather than country,” he says. “We feel like we are offering music that speaks to a wider range of country folk than what modern country music offers. We feel like we represent rural America.”

The members of Jericho Woods embody the rural lifestyle. Mitcham lives on his family farm in his grandparent’s 100-year-old house. Priest lives on his wife’s family farm and Spencer’s family are in the orchard business.  Mitcham also played at the FFA Convention in 2015 in conjunction with RFD-TV.

We caught up with Josh in our Music Row studios in Nashville to ask him a few fun, rapid-fire questions about some of the lead singer’s favorite things:

1. City or country? “Country.”

2. Football or soccer? “Football.”

3. Merle or Dolly? “Merle.”

4. Roping or riding? “Riding.”

5. Biscuits or cornbread? “Biscuits.”

6. Sweet or unsweet (Tea)? “Sweet.”

7. Boots or sneakers? “Boots.”

8. Favorite music venue? “Ryman.”

9. Last song you listened to? “Foo fighters- Congregation.”

10. Favorite holiday? “Christmas.”

11. Favorite RFD-TV and RURAL RADIO shows? “FFA Today on RURAL RADIO of course!”

Mticham confessed he does love another RFD-TV show. “My grandparents used to call me every Saturday night to ask me if I was watching the Marty Stuart Show. They thought it was fantastic, as do I.  I’ve always enjoyed Marty’s show. He has always been such a versatile musician and really promotes preserving the history surrounding country and traditional music.”

Jericho Woods was recently voted Best-Performing Music Group by Kentucky Living Magazine and played the 2016 CMA Fest. Jericho Woods recently joined RURAL RADIO Channel 147’s Janet Adkison on “FFA Today.” If you missed the show, you can listen to the full expanded interview on “FFA Today” here:

Rural Radio Celebrates Three Years with SiriusXM

  • July 14, 2016
  • by RURAL RADIO 147 on SiriusXM
  • · Channel 147 · SiriusXM

America’s First and Only National Rural and Agriculture

Radio Channel Celebrates Milestone

13707731_1042999332449710_491456788585558774_n(NASHVILLE, TN — JULY 14, 2016) Rural Radio Channel 147 on SiriusXM is excited to have reached its three-year anniversary as a 24/7, year-round channel devoted to providing a wide variety of programming for and about rural American life, the western lifestyle, and agribusiness interests. Over the past year, Rural Radio continues to give listeners all over America an unprecedented connection to the rural community with daily market updates, industry recaps, agriculture and rural news, rural lifestyle programming, and LIVE and delayed western sports events.

Celebration coverage will include live reports from the Rural Radio studios on “Market Day Report” and “Commodity Wrap” with anchor Marlin Bohling, as well as other programming honoring the milestone including “Ag PhD,” “Western Sports Round-Up,” and “Western Sports Weekly.” Additional news packages will be produced and aired on the “Rural Evening News.”

“Rural Radio was launched for the same reasons that we launched RFD-TV. We recognized there was a void in America for programming focused on agriculture, equine, and traditional family entertainment. We successfully filled that void in TV, so radio was not a big leap,” said Patrick Gottsch, founder of RFD-TV and Rural Radio. “At the time there was no other channel like Rural Radio Channel 147 on the SiriusXM lineup of 200+ channels. It’s difficult to stay in the house all day and watch TV. Rural Radio provided an opportunity for people to stay with RFD-TV throughout the day. It was also an opportunity to expand our programming. We expanded “Ag PhD” into an hour format where farmers and ranchers could call in with questions. Creating a daily show like “Western Sports Round-Up” and broadcasting the live rodeo programs on the weekends … we couldn’t do these things on TV, but we could do them on radio. It has worked out well. I’m extremely pleased with the progress we’ve made over the past three years, to have grown, and to have a channel devoted to rural America. And at the same time, SiriusXM has grown. We’re glad to be a part of that. They’re extremely thankful for our programming and we’re extremely pleased with them. We’ve just signed a new contract. We’re really looking forward to the next three years with SiriusXM.”

Rural Radio was launched on July 15, 2013 to give SiriusXM listeners all over America an unprecedented connection to the rural community. SiriusXM’s coast-to-coast coverage allows Rural Radio the ability to reach listeners nationwide who can tune in anywhere at any time – in a tractor cab, on the combine, or city commuter traffic – and get the latest news on the go. Rural Radio is the No. 1 single source broadcaster and No. 2 radio broadcast source for agriculture. Rural Radio has grown tremendously with SiriusXM Radio over the past three years. SiriusXM now has 30.1 million subscribers and 38% of farmers and ranchers tune in weekly, which is a growth of 150% year over year. As the nation’s first and only rural and agriculture focused radio station, Rural Radio announced its third year of program operations and lined up a day full of events to commemorate the anniversary.

The original kick-off celebration was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2013 and featured an all-day celebration at the finish line with food, music, and a classic tractor exhibition. In addition, the Rural Radio team set a Guinness World Record for the largest parade of pickups. The event was sanctioned and qualified against strict requirements specified by the Guinness World Records rules and featured a grand total of 386 pickup trucks from 31 different states circling the track.

“We’ve done a lot of things and been a lot of places with Rural Radio. When you launch something like that and make it grow, you have an opportunity to reach more people,” said long-time rodeo pro and host of “Western Sports Round-Up,” Steve Kenyon. “Rural Radio has created a unique opportunity both through our programming and live rodeo broadcasts to reach an audience that’s always wanted more coverage of Western sports. We are helping to create a new avenue for those events to get coverage and for the fans of those events to be able to see and hear their favorite events like never before.”

PRESS RELEASE: Rural Radio Channel 147 Breaks Through 30 Million Mark

  • April 20, 2016
  • by RURAL RADIO 147 on SiriusXM
  • · Uncategorized

Channel increases from 27% to 38% of farm listenership

(NASHVILLE — April 20, 2016) RURAL RADIO Channel 147 congratulated SiriusXM on their recent announcement that it now has more than 30 Million subscribers. RURAL RADIO Channel 147 has grown tremendously with SiriusXM Radio over the past two and half years, with 38% of farmers and ranchers tuning into the platform, continuing a three-year growth trend. As the nation’s first and only national rural and agriculture focused radio station, the addition of 465,000 new subscribers means more people will have access to the agricultural programming, commodities, and marketing info they need to do their jobs. Farmers and ranchers are heavy users of SiriusXM with 53% of all U.S. farmers who own 1,000+ acres subscribing to the platform.

“I’m proud that almost half of America’s farmers and ranchers are now tuned into RURAL RADIO on SiriusXM channel 147,” said Patrick Gottsch, founder and president of RFD-TV. “Powerful content of simulcasting “Market Day Report” and the “Rural Evening News,” daytime talk with “AgriTalk,” “Ag PhD radio,” and “Rural America LIVE” is attracting a huge audience. Then the daily western sports coverage, led by Steve Kenyon and the “Western Sports Roundup,” plus “live” carriage of PBR and PRCA rodeo events on the weekend, provides original programming not available from any other channel. While other networks struggle to hold on to their audiences, RURAL RADIO continues to grow.”

“SiriusXM has grown from a pioneering startup to a media powerhouse in less than fifteen years of service by providing listeners with the best audio entertainment available,” said Jim Meyer, Chief Executive Officer, SiriusXM.

Meyer went on to say, “Our exclusive, unmatched content and ease of use has led us to this important subscriber milestone. I’d like to thank our dedicated employees, our valuable content creators and brands, our automotive distributors, and most of all our paying subscribers for their contribution to our success.”

“I know from personal experience growing up on a farm in the central Great Plains, terrestrial radio stations often reduce power or change patterns at different times of the day or night, causing listeners to lose their signal – often at times when it is most urgently needed. Our coverage is consistent all over of North America – no matter what time of day or what kind of weather conditions exist – people in rural areas can rely on us for critical information regarding their markets, weather, and breaking news,” says Marlin Bohling, Markets Editor for RURAL RADIO. “We don’t have little one or two-minute snippets of ag updates. We deliver hours of long format ag information. It’s a huge responsibility, but one that all of us at RFD-TV and Rural Radio shoulder with the deepest respect for the listener whose very livelihood could depend on the information that we can provide to them.”

Rural Radio has the strongest programming line-up of any rural focused radio station, providing five hours of live agribusiness news on the award-winning “Market Day Report.”  Agricultural programs such as “Commodity Wrap” with Marlin Bohling, “FFA Today,” “AgPhD,” and “Rural America Live” give farmers and ranchers up to the minute news, when they need it most. Western Sports is also a major focus with “Western Sports Roundup,” live coverage of PBR and PRCA events, and a broadcast partnership with the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) Pro Tour. In addition, the programming lineup includes “Marty Stuart’s American Odyssey,” “Outside the Barrel” with Flint Rasmussen, and “Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World.”

“We’ve done a lot of things and been a lot of places with RURAL RADIO Channel 147 on SiriusXM,” said Steve Kenyon, longtime rodeo pro and host of “Western Sports Roundup.” “RURAL RADIO has created a unique opportunity, both through “Western Sports Roundup” and our live rodeo broadcasts, to touch an audience that’s always wanted more coverage of Western sports. We are helping to create a new avenue for the fans to hear their favorite events like never before.”

According to SiriusXM, they will release a full report about their first quarter 2016 financial and operational results on April 28, 2016. For more information, please visit investor.siriusxm.com.

For more information, please visit ruralradio147.com and RFDTV.com. Listeners can hear Rural Radio Channel 147 programming daily on SiriusXM, online, and via the SiriusXM app.

Getting to know the Hefty Brothers on RURAL RADIO on SiriusXM Channel 147

  • April 14, 2016
  • by RURAL RADIO 147 on SiriusXM
  • · Ag PhD · Channel 147 · Programming · Uncategorized

4178101_g

Brothers Brian and Darren Hefty are a busy pair. From helping with day-to-day operations at Hefty Seed Company to running their own farm operations, hosting Ag PhD on television and radio and being active husbands and fathers.

Q: What do you like most about hosting on RURAL RADIO?

Brian: It’s the same thing I like about being an agronomist; working with lots of different farmers and trying to help them make the best decisions for their operations. It’s tough to be a farmer and if I can help in even a small way I feel like I have done what I am called to do.

Darren: I am always looking to learn more about crop production so I can get higher yields on my farm and help others do the same. Talking to other farmers and industry experts on Ag PhD Radio each day is a blast. I’m learning something all the time.

Q: How did you get your start in Radio/TV?

Brian: Darren, my Dad Ron, and I started the Ag PhD TV show in 1998. We felt that farmers had a need for more agronomic information, and we knew we could help.

Darren: We made the decision to start Ag PhD TV back in 1997 and I spent that summer with a cameraman filming everything I could think of so we could produce half-hour shows in the spring of 1998. I learned so much that summer and had a lot of fun, too.

Q: What was your favorite episode or guest of the first radio season?

Brian: We have had many farmers on the show who have raised enviable yields in corn, soybeans, and wheat. We farm too, and my goal is to get 400-bushel corn and 100-bushel soybeans someday, so it is a lot of fun talking to farmers who are currently doing it.

Darren: I have really enjoyed talking to the 400-bushel corn farmers about how they are achieving that level of production. There are only a handful of these guys so far. I would love to join that select group someday.

Q: What can listeners look forward to in the next year on your show?

Brian: More info on raising better yields profitably while at the same time improving the land and the environment. We don’t spend much time on farm news, grain markets, or the weather, because farmers can’t control those things. How to better control weeds, properly fertilize, or other agronomic topics may not be the most exciting things for some, but for those of us trying to thrive on today’s farm, they are exactly the issues we need to discuss and learn more about in order to turn a profit and feed our growing world.

Darren: I’m excited about our summer radio shows because we’re talking about what’s actually happening in fields and taking live calls from farmers who are going out today to stop a pest or feed a crop. Also, we’ll be at Farm Progress, Commodity Classic, and some other key events around the country during the next year.

They had to answer some fun ones too…

Q: Favorite food?

Brian: A smorgasbord of well-prepared meat…prime rib, chicken, pork loin, turkey, etc.

Darren: Brian and I are both pretty serious about fitness. I’m getting pretty famous in the Ag PhD studio for bringing in a protein bar to have right before or after the show. Our production staff ribs me pretty hard about that sometimes. Oh, speaking of ribs, I love to grill just about any kind of meat. More protein. Big surprise!

Q: Favorite vacation spot?

Brian: My wife and I went to Bora Bora a few years ago. It was one of those bucket list things, and it was amazing.

Darren: Lots of good ones to choose from, but my favorite vacation spot so far has been going to Yellowstone National Park with my kids.

Q: What’s your guilty pleasure?

Brian: Fantasy baseball. I love coaching baseball, too, but when it comes to my guilty pleasure I enjoy competing against some buddies from college for a traveling trophy that I have won four out of the last 12 years.

Darren: I have a sweet tooth and the trappings of summer like ice cream, sweet tea or lemonade, always get me. I can’t say no to that.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about summer?

Brian: Heat. This year we had about 8 months of winter, so I was so thankful when I could finally go outside with no coat on. Obviously it’s also great to see the crops growing and for all the things we have prepared for all fall, winter, and spring to finally come to life.

Darren: Getting outside. I love being out in fields while the crops are growing. Spending time outdoors with my family is great, too. We especially like going on bike rides and the kids are getting into geocaching which has been fun as well.

Q: I can’t help but turn up the radio when ______comes on…

Brian: Rural Radio aside, I am a big Minnesota Vikings fan, so if I ever hear something about them or one of their games, I’ll listen!

Darren: My favorite sports programs are on. This time of year I like to listen to baseball games mainly to hear the stories the best broadcasters tell.
